A hungry dog, a trumpet, a little kindness and my daughter

Met my daughter at the water this afternoon and we walked her 2 dogs; gave them treats everytime they didn’t act like they were gonna rip passer-by dogs apart. (a couple real wicked Yorkies!)
Walked, talked, laughed and then sat on a bench overlooking the Pacific for a while near a grassy knoll.
A gentleman walked by with just the cutest pit-bull puppy. He pulled and pulled at his leash when he saw that the two killer Yorkies were getting treats for behaving…..for not making the blood curdling sound they make at other dogs. He wanted one of those treats bad, he tried so hard to pull his way over while we were shoving treats into the mouths of the two tyrants one after another and chanting, “good Rustle, good Rubee Jean”.
My daughter (Sweet Melissa) asked the gentleman if she could give Pit a treat. He smiled and thanked her but declined, somethin’ about dinner time?
This gentleman, by the way comes down to the grassy knoll every afternoon with Pit and plays his Trumpet.
About 10 minutes after Missy had asked to give Pit a treat, Mr Trumpet walked back over to where we were sitting and thanked Melissa for her kindness in asking about giving Pit a treat.
He smiled big, “we need to be kind,” and then said he was gonna play a song just for us.
OK, that’s cool, an ocean bench serenade.
Within the first 3 notes, we could name that tune; Amazing Grace.
Melissa began to cry….”it just makes me cry mom.”
Pit continued to look longingly at the Yummie bag in Melissa’s hands, Russie & Rubee were on the very edge of attack mode, Mr Trumpet was playin’ his heart out and well, Melissa cried.
When his song was done, we headed for our cars.
We waved as we walked by Mr Trumpet. He stopped playing for a part of a second, long enough to raise his two V-shaped fingers in PEACE.
We hugged good-bye in the parking lot.
“We all just need to be kind, mom.”
She’s right, it’s as easy as offering a dog a yummie.

  1. Sue, I have so thoroughly loved all the stories that you have presented on the blog as well as your book. I especially loved the 1984 Thanksgiving (both of them).
