CHOCOLATE MONEY

CHOCOLATE MONEY

I’m guessing different parts of our country have their favorite boxes of chocolates.
I was raised on Sander’s in Detroit and I still think maybe it’s the best.

Here in California, we have See’s Candy. It’s good. It’s REAL good! Makes me wish I had some right now.

One Christmas when our daughters were young adults, we decided to have some fun with them.
There were four of them and four partners of one sort or another.

We all came together the night before Christmas to share each other, not gifts.
Remember I said “young” as in young-with-no-money.

We didn’t need gifts; ten of us together in one room with snacks, drinks, music, candles…that was the gift, that’s all we really needed.

When the evening was half way over, we brought out eight one pound boxes of See’s Chocolates and placed them randomly on the coffee table.
We then told the eight of them that we hoped the box of chocolates would make them happy plus we were gonna make ONE of them REALLY happy because in one of the boxes, we’d placed a one hundred dollar bill.

In order for them not to be able to just kinda look at the boxes and see which one was tampered with, earlier in the day, we’d opened all eight boxes and then re-taped them back together. So, no way could they guess by looking.

We told them to look at the boxes real close and then each of them should eyeball the box they thought would have the bucks in it.
They were funny…VERY funny!

Usually in our family, the oldest always got to go first so that evening we started with the youngest and her mate.

They were told to pick a box and just hold it. No opening.

After they each had a box in their hands, we then gave them two full minutes of taking from each other; a variation of an old, fun Christmas present game.
Now THAT was REALLY funny!

After two minutes, the box they had in their hands was theirs to open.

ONE…TWO…THREE…OPEN!

The wrapping paper began flying, their laughter and comments were hysterical…my girls are VERY funny when they get goin’.

It was mere seconds when one of them yelled, “I GOT IT”.

All paper unwrapping stopped immediately.

There were moans, groans and cuss words and one happy person.

To be funny, one of my girls picked up her box of chocolates and tossed it down the hallway.
Our son-in-law aimed his for the fireplace but missed.

We were all in stitches laughing when one of the girls decided what the heck, let’s eat the candy. She opened her box and let out a loud YELL…..”I’ve got one in mine too!!”

Before an eye could blink, over the back of the sofa jumped the daughter who’d thrown her box down the hallway and the son-in-law who luckily missed the fireplace grabbed his unopened box off the floor.

All boxes were being ripped open and there were screams, laughter and just pure joy.

When you’re young and don’t have a dime, a hundred dollar bill in a box of chocolates is a big deal.

I don’t often come across boxes of chocolates but when I do, I always kinda hope along with my favorite chocolate caramel, maybe I’ll find a little somethin’ extra in the box.

Sometimes, life IS like a box of chocolates. You never know what’s inside.
