SOUP SLURPER

SOUP SLURPER

What made me think just because someone shines on the Silver Screen, they know how to eat soup?

I’ll bet you’ve never given how a movie star consumes soup one thought, me neither.
Until I saw and heard a movie-star slurp.

It happened one evening in the Mendocino Hotel, up-north California.

My daughter, her husband, Lobo ’n me were spending a week near Mendocino at an awesome complex of homes atop cliffs above the Pacific called The Sea Ranch.

But the first couple nights we spent in the charming, New England-looking town of Mendocino.

A movie was being filmed while we were there and it’s just always kinda fun to see a movie star.
I mean real true movie stars!
You know, those people that many see as bigger than life, the ones some try to dress like, talk like, live like…..them.

I don’t remember the name of the movie, but it was changed before it got to the big screen anyways.

There were two actors we recognized.
John Schneider was one, you know…the Dukes of Hazzard guy.
My girls liked that program and got a kick outta him.
I guess he talked kinda weird?
I saw enough to know it wasn’t my kind of sit-down-and-watch show.
But, he was adorable.
Much older of course, but still had a head of thick, curly blonde hair.
His eyes twinkled and he had a pull-you-to-him kinda smile.

The four of us watched as the cameras rolled.
They were shooting the female star of the movie.
She was driving an old klunker pick up truck, kinda fast down the road.
The camera crew was running along each side and the back of the truck and in front of them was a truck with a camera person shooting from that angle.
It was kinda interesting to watch and they did it a total of four times before the director was satisfied.

She was a pretty big star for a while and probably wouldn’t find this little tid-bit of a story very amusing so I don’t need to use her name.

But here’s how it went…..
The four of us were having a good time standing on the sideline watching how Hollywood works.
We were talking and as usual laughing.

John Schneider was standing almost alongside us and before long, he’d joined in on our conversation and was laughing with us.

Eventually dinner time rolled around and John asked us where was a good place to eat.
We told him where we were going for the night and he said he’d see us there.

Sure enough, when we walked into the bar part of the restaurant, there he was and he joined us when we sat down for drinks.
The five of us sat in overstuffed chairs around a big round coffee table.

My husband called our youngest daughter and told her we were spending the evening in a bar with Bo Duke, she was a big fan.
John was gracious enough to take the phone and speak with her for a few moments…..a big thrill for her.

We’d all been sitting around talking for about an hour when female star came barreling into the bar, she looked around for a moment, spotted John and headed toward the five of us.

It’s times like that when I realize acting is just their JOB.
This on-screen little cutie looked nowhere near how she’s usually seen by most of us movie watchers.

She was dressed in something somewhere between hospital scrubs and pj’s. Her face was bare of make up and her hair…..well, her hair was in no kind of long beautiful do that we usually see.

She was carrying a large bowl of something that looked hot, we could see the steam rising from the bowl.

She reached us and slapped that bowl down on the coffee table and then plopped herself smack on the floor, crossed her legs and began furiously blowing on the soup in the bowl.
I mean, I thought she was gonna make a tidal wave right in her bowl.

We all stopped for a moment but then politely, BUT WITH EYES ON HER went back to our conversation.

We all heard it at once…..a very long, loud SLURP!

I knew to keep my eyes off of my daughter or it would be over for both of us, we were both hanging on to our composure by a thin string.

And it happened again…..SLUUUUUUUURP!!

And we all kept trying to just keep talking like slurping was not happening..…
but it was.
Loud and long.

OK, I know slurping’s not a crime but I THINK it may be one of those unwritten rules of life…..don’t slurp….especially if you’re an on screen icon.
I suppose slurping is fine if you’re completely alone.
But slurping during a conversation?

There was a moment when I thought she was just gonna take a big inhale and the soup would all be drawn right into her mouth.

That cute little thing who stars in movies is a Serious Slurper!

I’m sure from time to time in my life, I’ve slurped, probably we’ve ALL slurped, but we seem to hold them to a different standard of living.

The slurping went on for a good five minutes and the five of us tried hard to ignore it and talk over it.
The grand finale after the last slurp was a burp.
Yes, the slurper was also a loud burper.
Oh how I wanted to look over at my daughter but that would be the end!

I guess we could be thankful it was soup and not a bowl of long spaghetti pasta.

Once when I would hear her name, I thought about a few of my favorite movies she starred in.

Now?

You guessed it…..the amazing soup slurper…..and burper!!

Fall and winter are on their way…..soup time.

I dare you not to think about slurping when you bring that spoon up to your mouth!!
